TESOL Standards

I intend to open a space to reflect on TESOL Standards. This is a challenging issue in EFL/ESL education. Standards are aligned to the curriculum development, instruction, grading, assessmentand and reporting. They enable us to be accountable for everything we do in the classroom.

Since this is an open space to reflect on my TESOL Standards course, I will be more than thankful those whose questions and comments to enhance my understanding.

In the meantime, these are my goals for the online course I intend to design.

Goal 1 : design meaningful activities using Web2.o tools for my TESOL Standards course

Goal 2 : create a free-risk e-learning environment for students to interact and enhance their teaching skills.

  5. Thanks for the comment, Hugo. You are right TESOL Standards takes a while to be assimilated, diluted until it becomes meaningful, useful and logical to use. The more I read and reflect about standards the better I get to understand and apply them. But as you said it takes time.

  6. Yeas, Ceasar.Ther is certainly a lot to reflect especially if you are a newcomer like me. I took the opportunity to learn and teach TESOL Standards just two months ago. It has been a challenging experience. I am learning a lot and yet the road is long. So I am expecting to learn along the way. And thank you for helping me on the journey.

  8. "I never taught language for the purpose of teaching it; but invariably used
language as a medium for the communication of thought; thus the
learning of language was coincident with the acquisition of knowledge."
Id like to comment on this comment, which I read in TEFLastic. This is how one must feel about being a teacher. Now how do we get this concept into practice for our online students?

  9. I think there are several underlying theories of language acquisition in that comment. This has been in debate ever since Aristotle. However, the majority of ontologists today and people dedicated to linguistics and philosophy mostly agree that knowledge and language align together, which means they appear, develop and grow together. They are interlinked.

  10. : I remember that I took TESL standards 3 times ‘cause it was so difficult for me that I dropped out twice, when I finally did it, it opened my eyes. I think it would be good to create TESOL standards applied to technology. I know it already exists but maybe there can be for Ecuadorian students/ older people/ young adults, etc. What I put in Angie’s blog is that maybe teenagers and adults need to “use Google docs to create a survey”. Maybe teenagers need to know it to use it in their society for adults (teachers) to their students. I’m sure everybody will learn from your experience.

  11. For me TESOL STandards is a big challenge. Actually, it is helping me redefine what I teach and how I teach it. I need to walk the talk and that implies a deep change in my practice.
When I accepted to teach this class I did not know how profound were the implications of standards as I do now. A Standards-based System demands accountability in every single step one takes from designing to assessing the course itself.
Besides, all stakeholders should be communicated on the process of using standards, how they are aligned to the curriculum, instruction, assessment, reporting and grading.

  12. The experience of teaching TESOL Standards has been an eye opener for me and even makes me understand better the grading criteria that the International Baccalaurate uses in the different subject areas.
